The bare Astoria stage lays open; just three rugs are placed beyond the mic stands and the drum kit is moved to the side as to not stand in the way of the intricate design of the Pretty. Odd backdrop. The lighting is low and grey, but the excitement from their loyal fans is as colourful as ever.
The newly understated foursome take to the stripped stage. Opening with We’re so Starving; a melodic apology for their absence then moving swiftly to their second place single Nine in the Afternoon; both getting a fairly sleepy reception. The mood is sombre and a little flat; possibly the tone the baby faced band were hoping for. Less clutter means little distractions from their messy play list of hippy tributes.
The appearances of debut hits The Only Difference Between Martyrdom And Suicide Is Press Coverage and I Write Sins Not Tragedies spark sing-a-longs and girlish screams; surely signs that this is the band the fans want and not the clouded Beatle mirrors that take carpeted positions tonight. The layers of electronics and fanfares are gone and the unfurnished strums and solo’s are merely shadows of the former !; which is well and truly gone.
